Experience Tennessee hiking and backpacking at its best! The Cumberland Trail (CT), a Tennessee State Scenic Hiking Trail, became Tennessee's 53rd state park in 1998. The Tennessee hiking and backpacking trail is also Tennessee's first linear park, following a line of high ridges and deep gorges along or near the rugged eastern escarpment of Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau. The Cumberland Trail is the basis for a large network of greenways that will crisscross the Cumberland Plateau north and south, east and west. It's now more than just a vision with more than 107 miles of open trail currently beckoning the hiker to the Cumberland Plateau. A further 175 miles of trails are in the detailed planning stage, with 24 miles currently under construction.

The Cumberland Trail State Park will contain a core corridor of 282 miles of trail beginning in the Cumberland Gap National Park (Ky) and stretching south on the eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau to terminate atSignal Point National Historic Park and Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area near Chattanooga. Additional secondary trails and multi-use rail-trails will create a master greenway that, when complete, will offer 370 miles of trail to the recreational user.

The CT is being built and maintained by a cooperative effort of the Cumberland Trail Conference (CTC) and the state of Tennessee. The CTC is organized under Tennessee Trails Association (TTA), a non-profit all volunteer organization dedicated to the promotion, maintenance, and construction of trails in Tennessee. The CTC organizes and provides activities that work toward the Trail's completion, and publishes a quarterly newsletter.

The CTC has a goal of completion for the CT of October 2008 --the 40th anniversary of the Tennessee Trails Association. The CT, as an interconnecting community greenway, will thrive only with volunteerism and leadership that you and your community can offer. So watch this web site for current information on openand under-construction segments, future trail work days, and how you can help make the CT happen.
